What is Algebra 1?

Algebra 1 is the first step into the world of abstract mathematics. It teaches students how to use symbols and formulas to solve real-world problems. At MathHog Tutoring, we make Algebra 1 clear, engaging, and confidence-building—whether you’re taking algebra 1 for the first, prepping for your first EOC,  retaking the EOC  or preparing for the SAT or ACT we can provide the extra support.

 What You’ll Learn

Our Algebra 1 program covers all the essential topics, including:

  •  Variables & Expressions – Learn how to write and simplify algebraic expressions.
  • Equations & Inequalities – Solve one-step to multi-step equations and inequalities.
  • Functions – Understand how to represent and interpret linear and nonlinear functions.
  • Graphing – Plot equations and analyze graphs on the coordinate plane.
  • Polynomials – Add, subtract, multiply, and factor polynomials.
  • Quadratic Equations – Solve using factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula.
  • Systems of Equations – Use graphing, substitution, and elimination to find solutions.

Algebra 1 EOC

Florida Algebra 1 EOC (2025) Overview

Purpose

The Algebra 1 EOC is a mandatory assessment for high school students in Florida. Passing this exam is a graduation requirement for most students

What It Measures

The test evaluates student understanding of the B.E.S.T. (Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking) Standards for Algebra 1. These standards emphasize conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and real-world application of algebraic concepts.

Format: Computer-Adaptive Testing (CAT)

Starting in 2025, the Algebra 1 EOC is delivered as a computer-adaptive test (CAT). This means:

  • The test adjusts its difficulty based on the student’s responses.
  • Correct answers lead to more challenging questions.
  • Incorrect answers lead to easier questions.
  • This format provides a more personalized and accurate measure of student ability.

 Topics Covered

The assessment includes, but is not limited to:

  • Linear equations and inequalities
  • Functions and their representations
  • Systems of equations
  • Polynomials and factoring
  • Quadratic functions
  • Rational expressions and equations

 Test Details

  • Platform: Administered via the Cambium Test Delivery System (TDS)
  • Calculator: A scientific calculator is provided within the test interface
  • Reference Sheet: Students can access a formula/reference sheet during the exam.Original article

Algebra 1 on the SAT, ACT, and PSAT

In 2025, the SAT and ACT math sections both emphasize algebra but with different approaches:

  •  SAT (Digital Format): Algebra makes up about 35% of the math section, covering linear equations, inequalities, systems of equations, and functions. Other topics include advanced math, problem-solving, and geometry/trigonometry.
  • ACT (Enhanced Format): Algebra accounts for 30–40% of the math section, divided into Elementary and Intermediate Algebra. The test now includes more high school-level math (80%) while reducing pre-high school content (20%). Geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and probability round out the rest.

In short, algebra remains a major focus on both tests, but the ACT has increased its emphasis on high school-level content.

The PSAT (Preliminary SAT) is a standardized test administered by the College Board, primarily designed for high school students in the United States. Here’s a quick overview:

 Purpose of the PSAT

  • Practice for the SAT: It mirrors the format and content of the SAT, helping students prepare.
  • Scholarship Eligibility: For 11th graders, it serves as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). High scores can lead to scholarships and academic recognition.
  • Skill Assessment: It helps students identify strengths and areas for improvement in math, reading, and writing.

 What’s on the PSAT?

The test is divided into two main sections:

  1. Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW)
    • Reading comprehension
    • Grammar and language usage
  2. Math
    • Algebra
    • Problem-solving and data analysis
    • Some geometry and trigonometry

When is it taken?

  • Typically offered in October each year.
  • Most students take it in the 10th or 11th grade.
